Perfectly Canadian
If you’re anything like me and love nature but aren’t the type of person to go full remote camping then the Graham Lake Cottage is probably perfect for you too.
I have been following Graham Lake Cottage on social media for quite some time and knew it would be an ideal getaway. Once Ontario got the green light to reopen, I quickly booked a two-night stay for September. It was soooo worth the wait. After the rush of summer tourism, I was feeling a little burnt out and needed a recharge.
Just 45-minutes away from Kingston is Graham Lake Cottage, an adorable retreat for a small family or group of friends. The cottage itself offers; two double beds, single bunk beds, and a sleeper sofa that fits two. The big seller though is the fact that the cottage is located on the peaceful shoreline of you guessed it, Graham Lake.
Owners Kelsie and Matt have completely redesigned the cottage to make it not only comfortable but decked out in tasteful Canadiana. From picture frames with the classic Canadian saying ‘Sorry’ to Canada mugs, Kelsie and Matt have really decorated the cottage to be clean and simple without ‘over-doing it’ with the Canadian theme.
When we arrived, we had a welcome gift waiting for us that included Haskap cider from BUSL, a s’more kit, and a six-pack of Molson Canadian in the fridge. True camping fans will still get to enjoy time around the private campfire and access to the cottage’s canoe.
Think: serene lake views, morning coffee on a private dock, cozy blankets, birds chirping, and a cool breeze. This is my happy place.
In the morning, guest can enjoy a private yoga session through Ocean Soul Yoga – this was one of the highlights of my trip. Stephanie was not only bursting with kindness but she was so accommodating to our skill levels and any COVID related request we may have – mask on/off, dock session, or more spread out on the grass. Basking in the fresh air, Stephanies calming voice, and the unreal views of Graham Lake was quite grounding.
For me, time spent at a cottage is all about embracing the surrounding beauty and tranquillity. I spent the majority of the afternoon bird watching – there were soo many blue jays, great blue herons, and nuthatches. I loved every moment of it! Snacking on s’mores, sipping cocktails on the deck, and listening to the moving water was all so delightful. The only thing missing was a fishing pole. Graham Lake is home to many different fish species including large and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, northern pike, and yellow perch.
If you wanted to head out for a day trip, Stephanie recommended the Blue Moutain Trail at Charleston Lake. You can also visit the BUSL Cidery located nearby or head into Brockville to see The Railway Tunnel. Boredom is not an option here.
Sigh, it was nice to get away with the fam jam to reconnect and make some memories together. The tranquil moments, relaxing activities, cooking, and feasting together was much needed after such an exhausting summer. We all went home feeling a little happier. I suggest you grab your bubble crew and plan a trip to discover what’s in your own backyard!
