Nothing about All Suites Whitney Manor is typical. This stunning estate, built in the early 1800s, is unique in all the best ways.
It’s one of the oldest multi-storey limestone structures in Kingston and the 1000 Islands and is the perfect blend of traditional inn and modern hotel. An architectural marvel at the time of completion in 1817, the impressive farm house was built in the likeness of an English estate, complete with spacious rooms and cathedral ceilings. The historic charm of this boutique hotel melds past and present seamlessly.
“From the dimensions of the suites, to the mix of luxurious amenities it offers, to the history of the building, there really isn’t anything like it,” said Robert Elliott, General Manager. He noted that previous guests have referred to staying there as spending the night in their own castle.
Old world charm meets modern luxury
Luxury is front and center at this boutique hotel, remarkably keeping its 200-year-old original design and structure intact while divided into five distinct suites. Located at 8 Starr Place in Kingston, All Suites Whitney Manor has five suites with one-of-a-kind features, from exposed limestone walls to private patios.
While Elliott said the architecture and modern amenities are a draw for guests, there are other attributes that also define and elevate Whitney Manor. “The first would be the size of our suites,” he said. “Our smallest suite is still probably double the size of the average hotel room while our largest suite is roughly 1,500 sq. ft. and feels more like your own private apartment.”
Whether it is the heated marble floors, spa-like bathrooms, or privately furnished patios, no detail is overlooked here. In fact, all of their one and two bedroom suites include a fully-equipped kitchen, a spacious living and dining area, a private balcony or patio, in-suite laundry, and more.
Elliott said the location is also a drawing card, offering a quiet and safe setting just outside of the city of Kingston, which makes for a peaceful stay. “You have the beauty of nature surrounding you, yet we’re only a short five to 10 minute drive from downtown Kingston and many of the attractions that bring people to the area.”
Elegance is in the details
When it was built, All Suites Whitney Manor included hand hewn beams, all the rooms upstairs and down had fireplaces, and there was even a flat section of the roof on which a fish pond was built. Fast forward to today and guests from across the globe continue to seek out Whitney Manor for its beautiful differences – knowing that luxury and privacy await in a setting that pays homage to its heritage.
Whether catering to large families or couples looking to get away and reconnect with each other or from business travellers to brides-to be taking photos before the big day, Elliott said most of the guests throughout the year hail from between Toronto and Montreal. That changes during the summer, however, when they see a large influx of bookings from Europe and around the world.
In the same vein, Elliott said guests appreciate various aspects of All Suites Whitney Manor depending on their tastes and needs as guests. “I often have prospective guests ask me what our most popular suite is or which one is the best,” he said. “I always enjoy explaining that our suites are as unique as the guests staying in them, so you won’t always get the same answer.”
For example, if guests wanted a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River then the Penthouse Suite would be a favourite. “Maybe you’re looking for a spa-like bathroom with heated floors and a deep soaking tub? Then there’s no doubt you’ll love the Sopwell Suite. Large families love the privacy and space of the Chapel Suite which can sleep up to six people and has two bathrooms,” Elliott said.
All Suites Whitney Manor is a self-catered accommodation, meaning self-check in, no on-site restaurant and lots of independence for travellers. The self-check-in process allows guests the flexibility to arrive late, with non-restrictive check in times. While the manor doesn’t incorporate a front desk or concierge, it does have someone available to guests around the clock, should they have questions or require additional service.
One point of pride is that about a quarter of all guests at Whitney Manor annually are returning guests. It’s a testament to the quality of their stay – Elliot said once people experience All Suites Whitney Manor, it quickly becomes their go-to spot whenever they are in the area. “If you’re a lover of history, and are looking for something different than your typical hotel or inn, Whitney Manor might be what you’re looking for,” he said.
